Sponsored by the Redwood Art Association, Art in the Garden is an annual opportunity for visitors to browse among artists at work in a delightful setting. The various venues have proven very productive for Cheryl.

In 2012, the venue was Gauche Manor in Bayside, home of Lynne and Bob Wells unique and intriguing garden. Artists tucked themselves in the nooks and crannies and painted in acrylics, oils and watercolors while onlookers sipped wine and observed. Cheryl found her spot before a voluptuous bed of scarlet gladiolas. She spread out a swath of paper and, with bold strokes, began to create the piece which, back in the studio would become Glad Tidings.

The site in 2013 was Dr. Peter Burgess's lush pond-filled garden in Freshwater. Painting at a table beside the pond, Cheryl was inspired by the water lilies and the reflections which filled it. She began the two paintings that bear their names.

The Sequoia Park Zoo in Eureka was the site 2014, and visitors wandered among otters, red pandas, and chimpanzees as artists painted them. Cheryl was intrigued by the flock of flamingos preening themselves in the water.l She stretched a seven foot piece of paper on the ground and began capturing the vision that would become Flamingo Tango.

Keep An Eye On It

Cheryl Peterson Rau's latest show is at A to  Z Eye Care.

Maybe the optometrists thought that if good art were around people would start to see better, or if that didn't work using art in the office could make people want to treat their eyes better!

After all, art makes people  better. As George Rochberg said: "The pursuit of art is much more than achieving technical mastery of means or even a personal style; it is a spiritual journey toward the transcendence of art and of the artist's ego".
If you know an artist well, like Cheryl, you surely know that this is true.

PictureCheryl and Water Lilies
Cheryl likes to try new things.
In this picture she is with one of her paintings, Water Lilies,  made with acrylics instead of water colors. Here she is in
the new Old Town Art Gallery, Eureka where she had a show last fall during  Arts Alive. Arts Alive Eureka is a monthly event that takes place in the streets of old town from 5 to 9 p.m. During this event the art galleries become main destinations for many people who  admire the beauty created by local artists who want to share their gifts with the world.
In the future Cheryl will be part of  Arcata Arts Alive with a show in Plaza.

PictureCheryl painting poppies during Open Studio 2014
Every year in the period of June Cheryl participates in North Coast Open Studio.
During Open Studio many artists emerge from their shells: they have a show in their own home where people can go and see their work environment and how the art is made, from watercolors to weavings.
Chery's house, in fact, is a living watercolor gallery: she and her partner decided to paint it in a way that seems to belong inside one of Chery's paintings, even in the garden where there are always colorful flowers.
Unfortunately this year Cheryl was unable to participate in this amazing event because she had a stroke in May, which she survived like a rehab rock star. Now she is recovering, and even though her show wasn't ready, people came to her house to see her working. At the beginning they were disappointed to see that the artist wasn't ready, then relieved when they understood why, and in the end they couldn't wait for the next show in
which Cheryl will participate.
